The chemical dump Breakwater 42
A dump for poisonous sprays and other toxic waste was constructed at Breakwater 42. Pollution from the dump has been seeping into the North Sea for many years. This pollution has now been contained by the insertion of steel plates around and a plastic membrane above the pollution. There is a dense layer of clay under the dump.
The steel plates and the membrane will hold for at least 15 years.
The enclosing of the toxic waste will secure the North Sea against further pollution while work on ways to clean up the dump is continuing.
More information is available at the toxic waste dump approximately 300 metres to the west.
